Posting well on Threads

A conversational tone, questions that start replies, and short threads.

What tends to work

Threads feels more like a conversation than a broadcast. Posts that sound like you talking, and that invite a reply, tend to fit better than polished announcements.

An honest question from your issue (“What would you do here?”) is often a good way in.

A useful test: would you say this out loud to a friend who reads your newsletter? If the post only works as a headline, it may fit X or LinkedIn better than Threads.

One idea, two ways

Say your issue, a weekly finance newsletter, argues that most people check their portfolio too often. On LinkedIn that might become a 1,500-character post with three reasons. On Threads it works better as something you’d say across a table.

A reframe: “The best thing I did for my investments this year was look at them less.” One line, a clear point, nothing to click.

Or an open question: “How often do you actually look at your investments? Be honest.” The question is the whole post, and the replies do the rest.

Both are made-up examples to show the shape. Use your own issue’s point and your own words.

How long can a Threads post be?

Each post on Threads can be up to 500 characters. The counter under the editor shows your count (for example 320/500) and turns red, with the number of characters over, if you go past it.

On Threads, the counter counts a link at its full length. That’s different from X, where a link always counts as 23 characters, so a post with a long link has less room on Threads than you might expect.

500 characters is room for a few short lines, not an essay. Many people find one point, said simply, works better than squeezing a whole section of the issue into one post.

Getting a draft under 500 characters

Select the part that runs long and choose Shorten from the menu that appears. Karrow trims it to fit the Threads limit while keeping the point, and ⌘Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows) puts the original back if you prefer it.

If it still doesn’t fit, there may be two ideas in one post. Move the second one into the next post with Add post, or save it for another day and let this post make one point well.

Can I post a thread on Threads?

Yes. Write your first post, then click Add post to continue it as a thread, the same way as on X. Each post in the thread has its own 500-character counter and its own media.

Keep threads short. Two or three posts that each add something tend to hold attention better than a long chain where the point arrives at the end.

  1. 1Start with the reframe or question in the first post, the box that asks “What’s the hook?”.
  2. 2Click Add post and use the next box (“Continue the thread…”) for the example or detail that backs it up.
  3. 3Stop when the point is made. Use the bin icon on any post you no longer need.

What images and videos can I post on Threads?

Each post can have up to 10 images or videos. Images can be up to 8 MB each (JPEG, PNG, WebP, or GIF). Videos need to be MP4, up to 5 minutes and 1 GB.

Karrow checks size, file type and length before it uploads, and tells you which rule a file breaks. It doesn’t convert or compress files, so a MOV or WebM video has to be saved as MP4 first.

How do I connect Threads to Karrow?

Open your publication, go to the Channels tab, click Connect a channel, and choose Threads. Click Continue to Threads, sign in and approve access in the window that opens, then come back to Karrow.

Threads connects as a profile. Each publication has its own channels, so connect Threads on every publication that should post there.

Run more than one Threads account? A Select account menu then appears in each Threads draft so you can choose which one posts. The default account is marked “(default)”.

Scheduling Threads posts

Click Schedule, choose a day and a time in 15-minute steps (shown in your device’s time zone), and confirm. Once scheduled, the text is locked, so read the whole thread, and the First comment reply at the end, before you schedule.

To keep Threads drafts conversational without editing each one, add a rule in the Threads box on your publication’s Voice tab, for example “keep it under three lines, no hashtags”. It applies to every future draft for Threads.
